How to make your own flexible bendable dread wrap / dread wire / dread tie / spiralock inspired (DIY)

I was online one day, and saw this thing that was very flexible and could be secure for my faux locs.

it was called a spiralock and the fabric was amazing.

i went online and they were going for like 20 dollars.

that was a bit much to me, i am a do it yourself type of person, i did my own faux locs (because its cheaper that way, lol.)

So i tried to make my own wire flex wrap.

nothing online was giving me any info on how to make your spiralock, i was googling wire dread tie, dread wrap.

there was nothing. so im going to tell you how i made mine.

this is my very first one, and it didnt take much to make it...

this is two feet of 14 gauge wire that was folded in half and twisted for the core

this is what makes it flexible in the middle. this is 14 gauge wire. but i kind like the feel of the 12 gauge more... so i used that. you can use what ever wire that holds its shape. you need to wrap the wire with one fabric on the inside and one on the outside.

wrapping it in two fabrics makes it softer. so you cant feel the wire too much

then i wrapped the fabric i wanted on the out side around it.

my fabric was just a old cut up shirt.

to close off the ends i secured pieces of fabric with smaller gauge wire and covered the wire with twine to cover it. twine was also used to keep it together. but you could also sew it if you dont want to use twine

this is the finished product. it held my faux locs over night, this is really secure. it wraps around once, it is 30 mm long.

so...
supplies i used for the item above:

  • 12 gauge wire
  • felt for the inside (you can use whatever you want for the inside, cut up shirt, cotton whatever you want)
  • a fabric for the inside
  • wire cutters
  • twine
  • outside fabric (old shirt)
  • small gauge wire for securing ends

conclusion:

I learned to make something new and that is always fun, it costed under 2 dollars to make, and its really secure. im happy with the outcome. this is my very first one, the next one i make will be longer.

if you have any questions about making your own. i will help the best way i can.
